Receipt tracker or budgeting app?

Three ways to track your money: bank-sync apps, spreadsheets, and receipt-first tracking with Reign. How to pick the one you will still be using in three months.

The three approaches

  • Bank-sync budgeting apps

Link a supported bank account to import its transactions automatically.

    What it gets you

Less manual logging for transactions from connected accounts, including recurring card charges. You still check imports and resolve missing or incorrect details.

    The trade

A line like "POS 4711" tells you where you paid, not what you bought. Cash shows up only as a cash withdrawal, unless you type each purchase in.

  • Spreadsheets

Use a template or build your own categories and formulas. Add purchases by hand or import a bank export.

    What it gets you

Control over the layout and calculations. Free spreadsheet tools are available, and you can keep your own copy of the file.

    The trade

You maintain the file and check imported rows and formulas. Receipt item detail needs to be added or imported separately.

  • Receipt-first tracking (Reign)

Snap the receipt in your hand. Reign reads every line item and its price. On Plus, receipts that arrive by email come in too: forward them, or set a rule once.

    What it gets you

You see what you bought, not just where you paid. Cash counts like any card. No bank login required.

    The trade

It records the receipts you snap or forward, expenses you log, and history you import. It does not pull a bank feed automatically.

When Reign is not the right fit

No tracker fits everyone. Reign is built around the receipt, and that shapes what it does well and what it leaves to other tools.

  • You want transactions from supported bank accounts imported automatically. A bank-sync app may fit better; Reign records what you snap, log, forward or import.
  • You split bills formally and track who owes whom to the cent. Shared spaces in Reign show shared spending side by side; they do not keep score.
  • You want investment tracking or a net-worth dashboard. Reign can hold a savings or investment balance you enter, but it does not track holdings or prices.

Why start from the receipt

A bank statement shows where your money went. The receipt shows what it became: the line items, the products, the pattern. Reign starts there because you cannot control what you do not see. For the longer version, readhow to track spending without linking your bankor how receipt scanning works.
